The American ultra-low-cost airline Avelo Airlines is based in Houston, Texas. Before switching to scheduled operations and changing its name to Avelo Airlines on April 8, 2021, it operated charter flights under the names Casino Express Airlines and Xtra Airways. On April 28, 2021, the airline's first regularly scheduled trip under the Avelo name will depart from Hollywood Burbank Airport and arrive at Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.

Destinations

A distinctive feature of Avelo is that it runs separate route networks on the east and west coastlines. A variety of smaller airports throughout California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Rocky Mountains are served nonstop by their major base in Burbank; at the moment, Avelo doesn't offer connecting flights.

A network of flights to Florida as well as flights to Baltimore-Washington (BWI), Chicago Midway (MDW), and Raleigh-Durham are all operated from its second hub in New Haven, Connecticut (RDU). Lastly, Avelo is expanding its footprint in a more limited way for flights to Las Vegas—the flight that matters the most to our review—with flights to California and Colorado.

Avelo Airlines In-flight Facilities

The 129 regular economy seats are only 17 inches wide and have a pitch of just 29 inches. There are 60 front-row premium seats with a pitch ranging from 31 to 38 inches, and they come with upcharges starting at $18. Apart for those in exit rows, most seats have reclining backs, tray tables, and tiny shelf for holding gadgets. But, don't anticipate any power outlets or entertainment screens.

In-flight Wi-Fi is something the airline will ultimately offer, but it wasn't operational yet. Also, it plans to acquire a liquor license so that it may offer alcoholic beverages, although on the maiden trip, passengers celebrated with sparkling apple cider.

Avelo Airlines Baggage Policy

Carry-ons and checked luggage cost the same amount on Avelo Airlines regardless of the route, although the price will eventually change depending on the destination.

Personal items and carry-on bags have maximum dimensions allowed, which are 14″L x 9"W x 9.5″H (35 cm x 23 cm x 24 cm) and 22"L x 9"W x 14"H (56 cm x 22 cm x 35 cm), respectively.

The weight and size restrictions for checked baggage are 50 pounds and 62 inches, respectively. Overweight and oversized baggage will cost passengers an additional $50 each.

The Avelo Airlines Experience

Passengers will be able to successfully check in for flights online and acquire a mobile boarding card, even though Avelo doesn't charge more to check in at the airport, unlike Spirit, for example. As Avelo is a budget airline, there aren't any incentives at the airport. Although they do offer a mobile app, it doesn't have many capabilities. 

You might now be able to check the status of your trip or show a boarding card, but you'll have no difficulty getting through security using a PDF ticket downloaded to the phone. As Avelo only offers service from Las Vegas to four locations, and no additional Avelo flights are booked after midnight, the process would be simple if you needed to check bags.
