San Francisco, California

San Francisco is Northern California's crown jewel and the most popular place to visit in April. It is home to many great attractions, such as parks, beaches and museums, and it also has a lot of history.

One of the best things to do in San Francisco is to spend a day at Fisherman’s Wharf. While you can discover about San Francisco's historic areas, you will also be able to visit some of the most important sites. Fisherman's Wharf is home to Alcatraz (an ex-maximum penitentiary), Musee Mecanique Pier 39 & 45 and The Cartoon Art Museum.

San Fransisco offers many museums for those who enjoy them. After you have chosen the one that suits your interests best, find out when free admission is available. Many museums in San Fransisco offer free admission on selected days of the month.

You must also cross the Golden Gate Bridge. This iconic bridge is an engineering marvel and a San Francisco landmark. Visit the Visitor’s Center to learn more about its history or simply stare at it from all angles and take pictures.

Best Time to Visit

April is the best time to visit San Francisco after the rainy season (November-March). In milder weather, enjoy April events such as the San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival and San Francisco Filmfest. San Francisco's climate can be described as pleasant throughout the year. It's usually between 63-75 degree F in April with a low around 50 F. However, it is more common to have one or two showers in April. Windy days are generally more common than wet ones.

Summer is actually peak season in San Francisco. If you want to avoid the crowds, come in the fall when the beaches are isolated, hotel and airfares are less and you can enjoy the city markets to the full.

Pro Tip

San Fran is unpredictable! It's foggy and freezing on one hill. On the other, it's clear and bright. The Golden Gate Bridge can be seen from the Bay Bridge on some days, while other days it is hidden behind fog that blankets most of the city.

Airport

We help you book flight tickets to San Francisco International Airport. It is an international airport in San Mateo County, 13 miles south of Downtown San Francisco, California. It offers flights to North America and is a major gateway to Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Australasia.

Best Things to Do

See the Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is even more awesome than you imagined. Since it opened in 1937, this 1.7-mile suspension span between San Francisco and Marin counties has become one of the most beloved bridges in the world. A work of art, an engineering marvel, and an American icon, the Bridge is flanked on both ends by the natural beauty of the Golden Gate National Parks. Enjoy an exhilarating, but often chilly, walk across it.

Explore Fisherman’s Wharf
More than 75 percent of San Francisco's visitors include Fisherman's Wharf on their itinerary. Fishing boats, sea lions basking in the sun, seafood stalls and restaurants, steaming crab cauldrons, family entertainment, and sourdough French bread bakeries, you know you’re in world-famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The historic F-Line streetcar and two cable car lines terminate in the area and sightseeing boats and boat charters link to Alcatraz "The Rock", Angel Island, and other points around San Francisco Bay.

Head over to Pier 39
Whether you're traveling with the kids, looking for a fun and romantic date setting, or just seeking a getaway with friends, the possibilities are endless at one of San Francisco's most beloved destinations. While PIER 39 has dozens of sights, sounds and tastes to explore, here are some you definitely won't want to miss: encounter sea lions, enjoy cruising, relish seafood and visit the local shops.

Drive down Lombard Street
The pretty, postcard view of Lombard Street has become famous worldwide and many visitors enjoy seeing the cars carefully winding down the eight, hairpin turns among the beautiful flower beds. This is a cool experience. Not that it's difficult, the speed limit is 5 miles per hour, but it feels like such an odd thing to do.

The paving bricks are a little slippery, and the turns are tight. Winding down a steep hill in a field of blooming hydrangeas, such fun! And what a great view of Coit Tower, the Bay Bridge and the bay, if you can take your eyes off the road.

Wander around a Pacific Coast beach
Along a dramatic, craggy coastline, the beaches in and around San Francisco have a rugged quality and moody weather better suited to nature walks than sunbathing. Swimming is out of the question at most of the beaches due to the unforgiving ocean conditions and dangerous riptides. Instead, visitors can admire the spectacular vistas, breathe in the salty sea air, and relax to the soothing sound of crashing waves.

Recommended Hotels

The April rates for hotels in San Francisco are some of the lowest. You can save money by planning ahead and looking for bargains. You can find one close to Fisherman's Wharf if you want to have easy access to the docks and great restaurants as well as many tourist attractions. Your options for a great stay include The Ritz-Carlton, The Inn Above Tide, The St. Regis San Francisco, Four Seasons Hotel, Argonaut Hotel, Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights to name a few.
